How To Start Building Your Layout

Once you have chosen your train set, you will want to begin building your layout.

Firstly, you will want to lay your tracks out onto your layout, to get a rough idea of the space you have to work with.

Secondly, you will need to find the specific track to which the power supply will be connected. Most train sets have a small plug or receptacle on their power supply track. This track is commonly referred to in most sets of instructions as the ‘feeder’ track.

Once you have found your feeder track, you will need to place it near to the closest electrical outlet. Then, connect your set’s tracks together and connect your feeder track to your power supply.

Now that your tracks are connected, you will need to place your locomotives and rail cars onto the tracks. Most train sets include a track called the ‘railer’ track, which looks like it has a ‘road crossing’ built into it. By carefully running your locomotives and cars across this piece of track, you will be able to get your equipment onto your model railroad’s tracks.

After you have gotten all of your locomotives and rail cars onto your tracks, you can connect your power supply to the electrical outlet. Then, slowly turn your power pack on until you see your locomotives begin to move. Make a note of the angle of your control stick as your locomotives begin to move, because this will be your train set’s ‘minimum throttle’ setting.

By this time, you will have built your basic model railroad and will be ready to enjoy the fun of operating your model train. Make sure that you always keep safety in mind when you are running your trains. It is possible to derail a fast moving model train, and fast moving trains that derail can become fast flying trains that may hit innocent bystanders.

In conclusion, the tips mentioned above will help you to select a good quality train set, as well as help you to get your model train up and running. Remember that you should put as much detail into your railroad layout as you can, because without a good looking layout all train sets may as well be decorations for bookshelves.
